Most amateur radio equipment can easily use it with batteries, as the performance of base station equipment, lead-acid storage batteries, or hand-talkies.

Another feature is the ham is relatively low frequencies, which at a distance without amplifiers or repeaters. It is therefore possible that a small resort or "talkie" "strike" (contact) a station outside the disaster area. [In fact, ham radios are able to talk completely around the world, and say a few radio as a hobby, collecting postcards from different countries. These communications are "direct", radio to radio without amplifiée or repeater in question.]

Wi-Max is a cell-based system, such as cell phones, but with greater frequency, providing more bandwidth. The capacity of long-distance, but are not possible without the "cells") (repeater. They must be within reach of a cell to get the system (about 10 km, ie, approximately 6 miles). In this caYes, it is likely that the cell has to, it was destroyed by the disaster, or at least without power.

In the case of distribution of hurricanes (,) enemy attack, it is likely that the cellular and Wi-Max is the first system to be doomed to failure. Things such as telephone and television remain active for longer, because many of his son's "Subway.

Amateur radio is an excellent cost-effective and reliable method of communication in the event of a disaster.

Besides the excellent answers above, another aspect of the topic (including ham, from time to time) and who are familiar with Morse code.

Although the rate of Morse code data is large, it is still communication. And in an emergency, all communication is better than nothing. Thus, the weakest of the issuer, in the worst weather, Morse code is the best way to contact with the world outside the disaster area to establish.

In my eyes, amateur radio is more useful in a catastrophe, because does not depend on transmission towers (eg mobile phones), or via satellite or internet or cable, either on land or the seabed. All or some of them could be removed during a disaster.

To monitor response and very good answers above, many public safety systems using computers to complex networks of communication. If the power goes out, or the systems fail, they are not suitable. Hams have simpler systems, which largely support these problems.

In addition, the hams are creative and can easily be used to create a communication network.

All other answers are equally valid. As you can see, we have a lot to us that most people do not.

, Disaster, infrastructure failure. It seems, where ham radio operators.

For example, last September was the biggest hit of the Cincinnati, with hurricane winds, because hurrricane Ike.
Power down and in some places, as long as 10 days. Communcations failed. The communication was not only working emergency generator systems. The phone will killed by Poles. Phones are necessary in order to have 8 hours, but most cell sites took 24 to 36 hours.
I had my HF radio communications throughout the country and my local FM. VHF repeaters were operated by generators on the tower sites. I have had my motorhome for a source of strength and able to prepare food.

WiMax could work if it is a source of energy to keep going. Laptops needed to load the batteries.

Many lay people have a battery or a backup generator, which works when the electricity goes out, may, in contrast to most communications systems.

WiMAX? You can use safely in a disaster, when all links operate on battery or generator backup.
